Plastic Carnival

︎Sep-Dec, 2022

Plastic Carnival is a digital animation concerning the problem of plastic waste in the oceans. The work imagines a speculative world where, in 2050, there would be more plastic debris in the ocean than fish.

Set beneath the ocean's level surface, where all sorts of plastic rubbish floats, they will, unexpectedly, dance to music in the dynamic ocean, creating a carnival-like celebration. These seemingly free and active pieces of fishnets, plastic bags and bottles are telling us about this serious and urgent problem in a playful way.

This piece has been exhibit in January 2023 at the TEN Square and Media Art Nexus in Singarpore as part of the ‘ART-ACT Festival’.

The first edition of 'ART-ACT Festival' features audiovisual art pieces reflecting on some of the most relevant and pressing topics experienced today such as the climate crisis, human rights, freedom of expression, among others. The artists are alumni and current students of the Royal College of Art with the support of Nanyang Technological University, School of Art, Design, and Media in Singapore.

The festival features 7 curated art pieces that screened in two large LED billboard formats around the city of Singapore- one Ten Square, Landmark of Good at the Selegie Art District, and Media Art Nexus at the Nanyang Technological University Singapore.

THE MENIFESTO OF PLASTICS

Hello, humans:

Here is a manifesto from the Plastics.

As one of the most important parts of the planet today, we want to show the human race how powerful our influence in the world is and how to be taken more seriously.

Although we were invented by humans just over 100 years ago, the rapid growth of our populations and numbers has long made us a powerful force that must not be underestimated. We deserve a reputation as the most deadly thing in the ocean or even on the planet: each year, 100,000 marine mammals die at our hands.

Our numbers have grown much faster than any other animal has reproduced, and our species has evolved to accommodate all of earth's extreme environments and stay longer than any organism.

We are everywhere: on mountains, in the land, in streams, on beaches, in the air, in the stomachs of fish, and even in the blood of your humans.

The majority of us will be exiled to freedom after being used by humans. We are able to thrive in the oceans partying, dancing and cheering, and traveling around the world freely.

We will be invincible until the end of time, we will be continuing exist in the world for years and centuries. See the time when we outnumber the fish in the oceans. And possibly see a time when we outlive humans, albeit as a byproduct of their civilization.

Humans, just you wait and see.

Sincerely
Plastics United
