Neo-fruit Lab
︎ June, 2020
In the course of history, humans have never stopped using technology to domesticate fruits. The rapid development of biotechnology today will also lead mankind into a "biosynthesis era." This indicates that the shape and production methods of fruits in the future may usher in a huge change.
"Neo-Fruit Lab" proposes a new production system for designing fruit species, so that people can design and create new fruit species according to their personal preferences. This work uses multiple media such as interactive web pages, edible props and video introductions. And it is intended to explore new possibilities for humans to shape and change organisms under the development of synthetic biology and genetic technology, as well as to discuss the new functions and aesthetics of post-natural organisms.
In this conceptual system people are able to create fruits of any shape, texture, and flavour in an interactive web page, with individual customised data generating parametric 3d fruit models in real time. And through 3d printing and mould making, I have created a new type of fruit that is truly edible and is finally presented in a concept video.
In 2020 this work became the winner of the MVM New Blood Project at Strawberry Music Festival and received funding for the project, which led to the following creation of a large-scale public outdoor installation as an extension of the project. The physical installation is a combination of fruit models, plants and light in the form of an inflatable prop installation, creating a innovative growing environment that opens up people's imagination to the future. I have also developed the generative fruit interactive page for mobile devices, which has exhibited alongside the art installation at the Strawberry Music Festival in Beijing in 2020.
This work was my graduation work at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and won the first prize for outstanding graduation work. It also won the Best Award and Jury Prize in the New Media Interactive category at the Young Blood International Graduation Art and Design Award in the same year.
