Mind Tunnel
Site-specific Audiovisual Experience, 2024
︎May, 2024
Mind Tunnel is a site-specific audiovisual experience developed in collaboration with Slash Arts and Copper Quay. The work transforms the historic Islington Tunnel into an immersive passage of sound, laser light, and haze.
Created together with artist Cainy and featuring an original sound composition by LAPIS, the project explores the tunnel as both architectural structure and psychological metaphor. This historic canal tunnel, where industrial engineering merges with natural environment, possesses a rare spatial character. The twenty minute boat journey through darkness heightens anticipation and uncertainty, turning physical travel into a perceptual transition.
Audience members enter the tunnel by boat, gradually leaving daylight behind. Three laser systems were mounted onto the vessel. One forms a horizontal plane above, like an artificial sky hovering within the haze. The other two projected toward the tunnel walls and water surface, generating shifting linear animations and abstract patterns. Reflections on water multiplied the beams, dissolving the boundary between solid structure and illusion.
The visual narrative evolved alongside the soundscape, moving from elemental and atmospheric textures toward more minimal structural compositions. Water, echo, and light became extensions of one another. We conceived the tunnel as a mirror of the mind; a portal into a spiritual interior landscape.
The experience unfolded in two contrasting chapters during the outward and return journeys. Each section presented a distinct audiovisual composition, inviting audiences to confront different emotional states before gradually reconnecting with external reality upon re emerging into daylight. The complete journey lasted approximately thirty minutes, forming a circular narrative of departure and return.
Mind Tunnel
