Boundaries is a contemporary ballet performance, which took place as part of the Chinese Ballet Stars Gala at the Shanghai International Dance Center on July 19th 2024.

“Boundaries give rise to all separations: the division of light and dark, yin and yang, nations, you and me.

For two sides, the line of boundary symbolizes opposition, yet it also distinguishes the tangible from the intangible, the many from the self, principles from bottom lines, affection from numbness, eternity from moments.

It is the completeness of boundaries that brings clarity and definition to the various states of chaos.”

As the visual designer, I developed a visual system that interacts with the movement on stage, using abstract generative lines as the core visual language. Beginning from the simplest notion of a line, the visuals evolve through choreography into shifting spatial structures that expand and contract in dialogue with movement, time, and space.

The design explores how boundaries are formed, inverted, and transformed. Linear elements intersect and grow into immersive spatial fields, evoking the emergence and disappearance of energy in a cosmic environment. These structures eventually fold into circular, black hole like formations, creating a sense of spatial tension and dissolution of limits.

Through this abstract visual system, the work translates the conceptual idea of “boundary” into a dynamic interplay between body and image, where choreography and visual design co-construct a continuously evolving space.
